100wwc donate $13,300 to two area groups!

LUCK – 100 Women Who Care - Polk/Burnett recently held their August quarterly meeting at Wilkins Bar & Resort in Luck. At the meeting, four non-profit groups presented to the women, explaining their missions, needs, and what they would do with the donation if they were selected to receive it. Members voted for the group they deemed most deserving, ultimately choosing to award $10,000 to the first place winner, Winged Freedom Raptor Hospital, and $3,300 to the second place organization, the ICCPA Foundation. 

Volunteers at Winged Freedom Raptor Hospital in Spooner rescue and treat about 150 injured and orphaned raptors from ten counties of northwest Wisconsin each year. Raptors include Eagles, Hawks, Owls, Osprey, and Vultures. Prior to the establishment of Winged Freedom in 2021, the closest rehabilitation facility for these birds was 3 hours from Spooner, meaning most did not receive care at all and were left to suffer and die of their injuries. Raptors, like eagles, are positioned at the top of the food chain. They are sensitive to changes in our environment and their populations reflect the health of our ecosystem. They provide valuable services to us through rodent and other small animal control. Sensitive to contaminates, their population health reflects our own population health. They choose northwest Wisconsin to live and breed in high numbers because of our lakes and forests. 100 Women Who Care - Polk/Burnett is honored to support those who provide care for raptors who find themselves in life threatening circumstances.

The ICCPA Foundation's mission is to increase literacy, strengthen reading skills, and create lifelong readers. By making reading fun and educational, the ICCPA Foundation aims to create a love of reading in children that they will carry throughout life. Currently, the ICCPA Foundation produces a monthly newspaper, geared toward students in second through sixth grade, filled with interesting stories about the USA, parks, pets, musical instruments, a recipe, a story with misspelled words to find, along with educational games that include math, word puzzles, telling time, and more. This newspaper is distributed free of charge to the school districts of Frederic, Luck, Siren, Unity, Webster, and Valley Christian School. The newspaper is also supplied to the public libraries in Balsam Lake, Grantsburg, Frederic, Luck, Milltown, and Webster, and to the Burnett Dairy Cooperative for any child that may be home schooled. With the help of funding from 100 Women Who Care - Polk/Burnett, they hope to cover all of Polk and Burnett counties, giving more kids the opportunity to improve their reading.

100 Women Who Care - Polk/Burnett meets quarterly, on the second Wednesday evening of February, May, August, and November and plan to hold their next meeting on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
